Microsoft has Abandoned Silverlight? No, No they haven't...

A very respected technology journal has reported the death of Silverlight in this article: InfoQ: Microsoft has Abandoned Silverlight and All Other Plugins

Of course, if you actually watch the keynote and read other BUILD conference information, Microsoft is doing no such thing. As a matter of fact microsoft has doubled down on Silverlight by not pushing Windows 8 to the phone level and sticking with windows phone 7.

My initial take on this plugin-less Windows 8 Metro browser is that its microsoft's attempt at dealing with the performance issue Android is having with supporting plug-ins in the tablet space. Imagine not just flash, but a pdf, a VRML, an applet, a silverlight app all running in the same page, or in even mulitple tabs. Lets just say the browsing experience would probably be less than optimal (not to mention the ding in battery life). For those who want a clean browsing experience (basically the equivalent of turning off plug-ins in an android browser), a quick button that turns off all plugins is just fine. It will also help with users who dont understand that plugins that they may not be using are hurting their tablet browsing experience.

There is no controversy, this is no End-Of-Life telegraph by Microsoft. I am very shocked that infoq would publish something so sensational. Nothing to See Here(tm).

Finding Libc So,  as you know, I've been tooling around with the LLVM IR syntax and the Gold Parser framework. I have the scaffolding for the CIL conversion 90% done, and I am almost ready to parse the "Hello world" code found in the LLVM documentation. There is just one catch. In the Hello world, there is a call to an external standard io library function called puts() . Those fimilar with C/C++ would know that you include the standard header, #include <stdio> or #include <stdio.h> and you magically gain access to this function. Porting that specific line into CIL would be easy, i'd just replace any puts call with a WriteLine call included in the standard System Library. This is fine to get the sample code running, but it is not a solution going forward. I need to get a list of basic libc commands and rewrite them to work with the System library in the CLI.
